Expected Workshop Attendance

2021 University-Industry Interaction Conference

This year you will have the opportunity to participate in four interactive workshops at the 2021 University-Industry Interaction Conference. To give our workshop facilitators an indication of the number of participants joining their session to set up their workshop accordingly, we would like to ask you to indicate what workshops you are planning to attend at the conference. Of course we invite you to participate in all four workshops for the ultimate learning experience.

Workshop 1: Measuring Success and Impact of Knowlede and Technology Transfer between University, Industry and Society

June 14th | 16:30 – 18:00 CEST

Our workshop aims to discuss the terms transfer success and transfer effectiveness and to agree on a common definition with the participants on the one hand. On the other, the moderators and workshop participants together will develop a set of indicators to measure technology and knowledge transfer success by focussing on the interaction of university with industry and society. The initiators’ background is the joint research project “Transfer_i” which’s name simply stands for Transfer Indicators. The research partners developed a holistic approach on the technology and knowledge transfer process to contribute to the rather fragmented state of research. In addition, the project points out its value of practice by attempting a measurement of transfer output and even its impact with quantitative and qualitative indicators.

Workshop 2: Using Strategic Foresight to Envision the Future of Higher Education

The aim of this workshop is to introduce participants to the use of strategic foresight for the purpose of developing the necessary vision and stimulating the necessary culture change to transition towards a new generation of universities. The theoretical framework for the workshop will be the Association of Professional Futurists Foresight Technical Competencies. This includes the following six competencies: Framing, Scanning, Futuring, Visioning, Designing, and Adapting. The workshop will focus on Scanning, Futuring, and Visioning to expose and give participants hands on experience exploring signals of change, identifying alternative futures, and developing and committing to a preferred future. Participants will learn how collectively applying these competencies will allow them to develop multiple scenarios related to the future providing them the opportunity to identify a preferred future that they can work towards. They will also see how scenarios enable people to view and live the future. Improving the employability of students will serve as one focus point for scanning efforts and developing related scenarios. While participants will need to do additional research on strategic foresight before using it, the workshop will provide them a foundation from which to explore additional information.

Workshop 3: FutureSkillsCanvas - A Roadmap to Collaboration?

How will we be working in 10, 15 or 20 years? Which skills do we need to focus on? Which set of skills do we already have – which do we need to acquire? And how can we acquire them?

In this interactive workshop we invite members of universities as well as practitioners from the industry to explore in a collaborative way which skills we have, which ones we need and what the prerequisite is to be well prepared for the future. The aim of this workshop is to get to know six sets of skills / fields of competencies which already play a vital role. In times of disruption and complexity – and especially in times of Covid-19 – we already feel the need for adaptive learning. How do we acquire new skills? Which mindset does it need? Which collaborative tools are useful to support the process of learning? This interactive workshop focuses on learning from each other, sharing ideas and collaborating in a way that the group designs a unique roadmap to collaboration.

Workshop 4: Enhancing Student Employability by Using Lean Startup Principles and by Developing an Entrepreneurial Mindset

AIM 1: The workshop aims to present new concepts on how the Lean Startup methodology can be applied to enhance university student/graduate employability and improve job placement outcomes after graduation. Example A): Just as entrepreneurs need to validate early their “product-market fit”, students need to validate in Year 1 their “student-company fit” (based on industry size, industry profitability, company hiring needs and salary statistics). Example B): Just as entrepreneurs need to constantly iterate their business model, students need to continuously iterate their “skills development plan” (what courses to take, what corporate-theme assignments to produce, what internships to target) based on feedback from employers/HR. Example C): Just as entrepreneurs occasionally need to “pivot” (change course completely) for their startup to survive, students may have to be prepared to change their university major or future employment plans completely if earlier iterations have not been successful (e.g. did not result in an internship in that industry).

AIM 2: Seek feedback from participants on the applicability and feasibility of these concepts at their own institutions.

AIM 3: Identify examples of good practice where this is already happening (even if it is not recognised under the Lean Startup terms).

AIM 4: Create a group of early adopters among employability-focused institutions.
