Knowledge Share: Accelerating technology transfer through a digital marketplace for academic innovation
In Europe’s pursuit of a more connected and innovation-driven knowledge economy, the flow of ideas from universities to industry remains a bottleneck. While academic research continues to generate impactful intellectual property (IP), much of it remains underutilised due to the complexity of the language, institutional policies and the absence of an efficient matchmaking mechanism. Enter the Knowledge Share Initiative: a free, digital platform that presents academic patents in easy-to-understand language, facilitates contact with inventors and fosters partnerships across the European innovation landscape[1].
Launched with the backing of the university network for research valorisation (Netval) and the Italian Patent Office, and uniting efforts from over 80 universities and public research bodies, Knowledge Share has become a showcase platform for European academic IP. Its model combines editorial clarity, a user-friendly interface and active partnership-building, translating scientific potential into real-world collaboration[2].
Giving academic IP the visibility it deserves
The momentum for Knowledge Share arose from a widespread challenge: while patenting activity among universities and public research organisations is rising, their inventions often fail to reach companies or investors capable of developing them further[3], let alone markets. According to the European Patent Office (EPO), only a small fraction of patent applications come from academia and even those that do rarely attract broad attention beyond their host institutions.
Knowledge Share set out to reverse this trend on two fronts. First, by translating dense patent language into concise, market-oriented “tech briefs” and tagging each invention by field, keywords and host institution, the platform dramatically widens the audience for existing academic IP, turning once-invisible filings into discoverable business opportunities. Second, the prospect of that visibility feeds back into the upstream decision to patent in the first place: when researchers and tech-transfer offices know their inventions will sit in a shop window visited daily by investors and corporates, the expected pay-off from seeking protection rises, nudging more academics to file rather than publish and forget. Each listing therefore serves a dual purpose—showcasing today’s breakthroughs while signalling to tomorrow’s inventors that patenting is worth the effort.
Open access meets quality control
Unlike conventional IP databases, Knowledge Share’s success lies in its ability to balance openness with quality control. Every patent listing is curated and reviewed by a dedicated editorial team, ensuring consistency in tone, format and usability[2]. The result is a growing portfolio — over 1,000 published patents across biotechnology, energy, ICT, material science and more — that feels accessible not only to tech transfer professionals but also to small businesses, investors and product developers.
The platform’s freemium philosophy is a deliberate design choice. By removing paywalls or licensing restrictions on access, Knowledge Share reinforces the idea that knowledge exchange should not be hindered by bureaucracy or cost[1]. At the same time, it actively involves institutional tech transfer offices (TTOs), ensuring that each contact request is followed up by local experts while benefiting from the platform’s broader visibility and analytics[2].
Building a collaborative IP ecosystem
Knowledge Share is not just a repository, it is an evolving ecosystem builder. The platform’s reach is reinforced through regular outreach and events such as the Tech Collider, a multi-day digital showcase event that brings together research teams, opinion leaders and potential partners to discuss trends and technologies in specific sectors. The first edition, focused on biomedical innovations, drew over 870 attendees, showcasing the strong appetite for digital matchmaking tools in the academic IP space.
Moreover, by collaborating with the Italian Patent Office, Knowledge Share provides added incentives for institutions to maintain high-quality listings and proactively engage with users. This blend of bottom-up participation and top-down policy alignment gives the initiative a uniquely scalable edge[3].
Impact and implications for the European innovation ecosystem
The EU’s new Guiding Principles for Knowledge Valorisation ask Member States to make publicly-funded R&I “visible, findable and usable” across borders. Knowledge Share shows what that looks like in practice: a single front door where 1,300+ patented technologies from 60 % of Italy’s universities can be filtered by field, maturity or owner, turning abstract IP into actionable leads. By stripping out legal jargon and creating plain-language tech briefs, the platform cuts a key friction cost flagged by the Commission – the translation gap between the lab and the market.
Since launch in mid-2019, the site has logged 50,000 technology views and 2,000+ marketing-sheet downloads. Is that a lot? Compare it with AUTM’s long-running Innovation Marketplace in the US: around 2 million page views a year for 31,000 listings – roughly 65 views per asset. Knowledge Share’s close to 40 views per asset are in the same order of magnitude, despite a far smaller inventory and limited advertising, suggesting genuine market pull.
In 2021 the Commission tagged Knowledge Share as an EU best-practice case in knowledge valorisation, and Netval reports inbound interest from TTO networks in other EU countries, including Spain and the Czech Republic. The model dovetails neatly with Horizon Europe’s new calls that fund “AI-powered valorisation marketplaces”, so scaling a pan-EU layer would require more governance than invention. In short: what began as an Italian fix now points to a replicable, policy-aligned backbone for Europe’s distributed research base.
Conclusion
Knowledge Share has shown that curated presentation and open access can move academic IP off the shelf and onto companies’ radar. In just a few years, 1,300 inventions from most of Italy’s universities have drawn roughly 50,000 targeted views and more than 2,000 downloads, numbers that rival much larger marketplaces despite a far smaller inventory. Endorsement as an EU best-practice case and early interest from other member states confirm that the model is attractive and can be exported.
What remains is to extend the reach, not reinvent the wheel. Aligning Knowledge Share with Horizon Europe’s planned AI-enabled valorisation tools and linking it to other national patent offices would give researchers continent-wide exposure and give businesses a single, friction-light entry point to Europe’s science base. The infrastructure and methodology already exist; scaling them is a question of coordinated adoption.
For universities and TTOs, joining portfolios on a proven platform means faster paths to partners. For industry and investors, it offers a ready stream of de-risked opportunities. In addition to that, for policymakers, it is a practical, budget-efficient route to convert publicly funded research into growth and societal benefit. The blueprint is in place —building the pan-European layer is now the logical next step.
