From the laboratory to space and back again: Driving the space sector forward in Scotland

The University of Strathclyde is taking a leading role in shaping Scotland’s fast-growing space industry through the establishment of the West of Scotland Space Cluster. With more than 20 industry partners, four universities and colleges, and key national agencies involved, the cluster provides a coordinated platform to map sector needs, drive partnerships, and accelerate capabilities in satellite technologies, space data and deep-tech innovation. This ecosystem approach brings together research excellence, business expertise and government support to advance Scotland’s position in the UK and global space economy.

Alongside cluster creation, Strathclyde has led a major £100 million Investment Zone proposal aimed at providing shared facilities, innovation programmes and collaborative R&D opportunities. The initiative has already attracted inward investment, created new jobs and strengthened links with organisations such as SaxaVord Spaceport and the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland. This case demonstrates how universities can function as anchor institutions in emerging sectors, convening cross-sector partners and building the infrastructure needed for long-term innovation and regional development.
