The 2026 UIIN Conference Proceedings bring together 18 academic and practitioner contributions exploring the challenges and solutions involved in fostering entrepreneurial universities and collaborative innovation. Drawing on experiences from institutions and innovation ecosystems around the world, the collection examines how universities can strengthen the cultures, capabilities, structures, and relationships needed to generate meaningful economic and societal impact.

Several contributions consider the growing influence of artificial intelligence. HTW Dresden and OTH Regensburg examine its implications for teaching and learning, while Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences explores the potential of AI assistants to make university expertise and collaboration opportunities more accessible to industry. OPAIC Auckland International Campus offers a timely counterpoint, emphasising the importance of protecting trust, tacit knowledge exchange, and human judgement as AI becomes more deeply embedded in collaborative research.

Institutional culture and professional capability emerge as equally important themes. The University of Bologna presents a pilot project supporting university–business collaboration in the Humanities, while Chalmers University of Technology broadens the understanding of academic intrapreneurship and its contribution to systemic change. Manchester Metropolitan University and Knowledge Exchange UK introduce a professional standards framework for knowledge exchange and innovation, complemented by contributions from Mälardalen University and the Universities of Oulu and Turku on cross-sector mobility and the role of professional staff in sustaining meaningful partnerships.

The proceedings also showcase practical approaches to engagement and knowledge valorisation. The University of Arizona presents a year-round model for industry and academic engagement, Tampere University of Applied Sciences demonstrates how value creation can begin earlier in collaborative projects, and the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research evaluates the effects of dedicated funding for research utilisation. Further contributions examine testbed-enabled innovation in regional manufacturing and the use of knowledge transfer data to evaluate partnership effectiveness.

Other papers expand the conversation through futures literacy, engineering education pathways, cross-border research design, and place-based ecosystem development. From making collaboration in SHAPE disciplines more visible to using city prototyping to mobilise regional innovation, these contributions demonstrate the diverse forms that entrepreneurial and engaged universities can take.

Together, the proceedings provide a valuable international perspective on how universities and their partners are redesigning collaboration, strengthening institutional capacity, and responding to technological and societal change.
