Helping researchers move from technological excellence to market relevance

Client: Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien)
Years: 2019-Present
Participants: 150+ Researchers

The challenge
TU Wien is home to world-class researchers and breakthrough technologies. Yet many researchers were far more familiar with proving technical feasibility than validating whether their innovations solved real-world problems. The university wanted to strengthen the entrepreneurial capabilities of researchers and students, helping them translate research into innovations, ventures, and collaborations that create societal and economic value.
The UIIN approach
Since 2019, UIIN has partnered with TU Wien’s Innovation Centre to deliver a series of hands-on workshops for researchers, doctoral candidates, and students, focused on:
- Developing an entrepreneurial and opportunity-oriented mindset
- Understanding markets, customers, and industry needs
- Building value propositions and business models
- Mapping ecosystems, stakeholders, and resources
- Communicating and pitching innovation ideas effectively
The programme was designed to help participants shift their perspective from technology-first thinking towards understanding real problems, users, and market needs.
What We Found
Researchers were highly skilled at developing innovative technologies and achieving proof-of-concept. The greater challenge was helping them test assumptions, engage potential users, and validate whether their innovations addressed genuine market needs. Building confidence around customer discovery and commercial thinking proved just as important as technical expertise.
The Outcome
✓ More than 150 researchers and students supported since 2019
✓ Stronger entrepreneurial and innovation capabilities across the university
✓ Increased confidence in market validation and customer discovery
✓ Greater ability to translate research into products, services, and ventures
✓ One of the highest-rated training initiatives delivered by the TU Wien Innovation Centre
✓ Support for the development of technology-driven innovation projects and start-ups
Key Lesson
The journey from research to innovation rarely fails because of the technology itself. More often, success depends on understanding the problem, engaging potential users early, and validating real-world demand. Helping researchers make that shift from proof-of-concept to problem-solution fit can dramatically increase the chances of creating lasting impact.
