The vision and mission of ZEISS Innovation Hub
The ZEISS Innovation Hub at KIT is a manifestation of the strategic alliance between ZEISS and KIT. According to Max Riedel, the hub serves as both a physical space and a developmental unit. The building, located on the KIT campus, houses several parties from both ZEISS and KIT, providing an environment conducive to synergy and innovation.

The aim is to leverage the innovation ecosystem surrounding the university, encompassing other institutions, spinoffs, and area businesses, to anticipate and shape the future.
The role of proximity in collaboration
The concept of proximity is central to the effectiveness of the ZEISS Innovation Hub. Riedel outlines the stages of innovation, from ideation to joint development, and explains how close physical interaction enhances each step.
In the initial stages, proximity to diverse disciplines at KIT enables serendipitous encounters and cross-pollination of ideas. Whether through local conferences, start-up meetups, or informal gatherings, co-location fosters exposure to a breadth of expertise beyond ZEISS’s traditional focus.
The subsequent stages, which involve refining ideas into concrete concepts and developing them jointly, benefit immensely from trust-building facilitated by physical proximity. “We have a really high student-to-employee ratio”, remarks Riedel, noting that the hub provides students with a responsible, impactful environment. The proximity to KIT and other universities means students can seamlessly move between academic and industrial settings, gaining multidisciplinary exposure and experience.
The hub also integrates closely with educational programmes, offering courses and engaging in graduate schools like the Karlsruhe School of Optics and Photonics. This approach ensures that students have early exposure to industrial opportunities, which often leads to internships, theses, and subsequent employment at ZEISS.
Mechanics of effective collaboration
Effective university-industry collaboration requires careful alignment of goals and expectations. The partnership between ZEISS and KIT is governed by a high-level steering committee with representatives from both the corporate board of ZEISS and the administration of KIT. To enhance serendipitous encounters, the ZEISS Innovation Hub engages in various activities. Educational courses, hackathons, and an annual partner summit foster interactions between students, ZEISS staff, and researchers. The summit, focusing on a different core topic each year, not only promotes knowledge exchange but also validates emerging areas of interest.
Moreover, the Collaboration Catalyst Fund, a seed fund supporting new joint projects between ZEISS and KIT researchers, encourages exploratory initiatives and relationship-building.
