Imagine a vibrant network where ideas flow freely, and collaboration turn visions into reality—this is precisely the essence of the innovation ecosystem at Amsterdam Science Park. Bringing together prominent institutions like the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the Dutch Research Council, several of the nation’s largest research institutes, and numerous multinationals, it operates as one of Europe’s largest innovation hubs. This strategic location fosters a thriving community of researchers, startups, businesses and policymakers across various sectors. Key focus areas at the park include AI & data science, sustainability, life sciences, and high-tech systems & materials. The Amsterdam Science Park also happens to be the home base of UIIN and shares a similar ethos; the park leverages direct access to talent and experts to enhance R&D programs and foster extensive university-industry collaborations.

In July 2024, we at UIIN were invited to participate in a demo day workshop organised at Amsterdam Science Park. Designed for entrepreneurs and other stakeholders eager to collaborate and establish R&D spaces, the workshop kicked off with a showcase of cutting-edge practices by three resident startups – and this is what we learned.

SustainaLab: Pioneering collaboration for a greener tomorrow

SustainaLab is a collaborative initiative with UvA and Amsterdam Science Park stakeholders, namely Science & Business Organisation and Matrix Innovation Centre. It provides a dynamic physical space at the park, embedded within a broad ecosystem of researchers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers. Its primary goal is to bring together university researchers & students with companies, governments, NGOs and citizens to accelerate the shift toward a sustainable, future-proof society. SustainaLab’s current thematic areas include zero waste, AI, sustainability and plastic pollution, with activities grounded in scientific and interdisciplinary methods. These activities range from meetings and presentations to hackathons, maintaining a flexible and open structure for cooperation in sustainability fields.

Companies and governments are routinely engaged through events like documentary viewings, updating them on sustainability topics and connecting them with researchers and other innovators. For researchers, SustainaLab provides them a platform to connect with industry and government stakeholders, frequently hosting events to showcase their research work. Students can also participate in these events to stay informed, share their project outputs, and explore internship opportunities through the lab’s network. By connecting the right people with relevant opportunities, SustainaLab leverages its diverse & multidisciplinary network to address sustainability challenges.

Spark904: Revolutionising R&D with ‘Labs as a Service’

Founded in 2018 as a spin-off from the Chemistry department at UvA, Spark904 acts as a technical consulting & research partner for companies’ R&D activities using a ‘labs as a service’ model. Specializing in chemistry, the company focuses on accelerating business innovations specifically in the fields of sustainability and material circularity. Spark904 offers services such as data analysis, chemical advice, and R&D project execution for external stakeholders.

Spark904 has supported 50 companies across Europe in various sectors, including food science, sustainability, waste valorisation, material production, and pharmaceuticals. The initiative boasts a dedicated team of in-house researchers and an academic advisory board of PhD and professor-level consultants from UvA. With this research infrastructure, Spark904 links universities with external stakeholders, enabling university startups and other SMEs to pursue R&D activities at lower costs.

Open Kitchen Labs: Cultivating innovation in shared spaces

Open Kitchen Labs, established in 2022 as a spin-off from UvA, offers a shared lab space concept with fully equipped lab facilities for startups in sustainability and biotechnology. They offer chemistry and biotech labs where businesses can rent a desk long-term or buy a day pass for their R&D activities. Its main aim is to help startups bypass the significant costs & risks associated with physical lab setups such as R&D outsourcing and unstable funding. This approach ensures their potential to reach the scaleup stage, a bonus effect being the opportunity for close collaboration with other likeminded startups.

Key takeaways

The workshop was a powerful reminder of the transformative potential that university-industry collaborations hold in shaping our future. By linking universities with a supportive industry ecosystem, such startups sharing a physical space could potentially catalyse breakthroughs to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges. As we witnessed firsthand, when stakeholders unite with the right resources and collaborative spirit, they do more than create new products—they push the conversation forward for a more sustainable and resilient society. The innovative energy unleashed here at Amsterdam Science Park was just the beginning, setting the stage for continued progress and impact in this direction.
