Globally competitive, locally impactful: The University of Tennessee, Knoxville
It’s an exciting moment for Tennessee’s innovation ecosystem. With targeted funding to spur university–industry R&D, UIIN’s Initiator Member University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT Knoxville) sits at the centre of the action. We spoke with RJ Youngblood, Director of Economic Engagement and Strategic Initiatives, and Marc Gibson, Associate Vice Chancellor at the Office of Research, Innovation and Economic Development, about how the university is seizing these opportunities and building coalitions across the state and beyond.
Building alignment for impact
UT Knoxville’s goal is to accelerate and lead regional innovation through coalitions with industry and community partners:
It’s important that we align with our statewide initiatives and also think about how we support the overall innovation economy across the state and throughout the region.
Despite Tennessee’s strong manufacturing base, it does not have a tremendous number of companies headquartered or running R&D there. The university is therefore working to engage companies to bring R&D to the state while aligning its own efforts by training the needed workforce and focusing research on Tennessee’s strengths. New industry-aligned curricula ensure teaching and research move in step with partners, with regular partner feedback to keep programmes serving state priorities and coalitions.
Building a culture of innovation
The Chancellor’s Innovation Fund commits $250,000 annually to seed up to five very early-stage technologies, helping de-risk faculty entrepreneurship. Recent wins include a faculty member’s deal with FIFA to improve turf safety globally, with work planned around the World Cup. The university is also rethinking hiring, including a $50 million commitment to recruit top global engagement talent.
From our chancellor to our governor, leadership across the board is aligned on developing a culture of innovation at the University of Tennessee.
State momentum
UT Knoxville’s efforts complement statewide moves: the Department of Economic and Community Development has launched an innovation office and a $25 million fund to seed university–industry projects. More broadly, Tennessee has announced $50 million across two innovation funds, creating strong opportunities for business and academia. As the state’s flagship, with a presence in all 95 counties, UT Knoxville is well placed to grow the innovation economy in partnership with local communities.
To catalyse regional growth, UT Knoxville is rolling out place-based innovation initiatives centred on five “innovation gateways”: artificial intelligence, advanced mobility, human health and wellness, materials and manufacturing, and energy and environment, the last leveraging proximity to Oak Ridge National Laboratory. To deliver on these priorities, the university is developing innovation parks, expanding its research park, and strengthening the Oak Ridge Corridor through joint faculty appointments, joint institutes, and experiential opportunities for students.
A strategic partnership with Volkswagen
A flagship partnership with Volkswagen began with the company’s major Chattanooga investment (2008–2009) and matured from 2017, extending to Volkswagen Group Innovation in Wolfsburg. In 2020, Volkswagen established one of its five global innovation hubs in UT’s research park, deepening collaboration in electrification, materials and manufacturing. The partnership spans joint hiring, curriculum development and faculty engagement, and includes the Volkswagen PhD Fellows programme, which embeds students in “lighthouse projects” and pathways into the company’s global innovation ecosystem. The collaboration stands out for its global reach and the university’s flexibility in aligning education, research and talent with Volkswagen’s priorities.
Defining the future of higher education together
UIIN events have been exciting opportunities for Marc and RJ in the past. Whether they have been learning from best practices in the field or presenting on initiatives themselves, they have relished the opportunity to be in a room full of experts, engaging in important conversations and sharing perspectives from all around the world.
A coach once told me that you’ll become a better runner if you run with the best. That’s how I see UIIN – we want to give the University of Tennessee the chance to run with the best.
The UIIN Community connects UT Knoxville to a global network of peers who are exploring innovation and the future of higher education together – people they might not otherwise have the chance to engage with. According to Marc and RJ, the UIIN Community keeps the team current, connected and future-focused, and they encourage colleagues to participate and draw on UIIN’s insights and publications to expand the team’s knowledge base.
Running with the best
Going forward, Marc and RJ are exploring how universities can close the loop between innovation, engagement, and partnerships, while also addressing the full value chain of economic prosperity. With UIIN’s strong focus on these areas, they are eager to both learn about approaches to commercialisation and technology transfer, and to share their own experiences and successes from Tennessee.
UT Knoxville is a clear example of a regionally engaged university – deeply embedded in its local innovation ecosystem while contributing knowledge, talent, and partnerships that fuel economic and social development across the state. By engaging with leading universities in the UIIN network, they aim to “run with the best” and ensure UT Knoxville is part of a community driving excellence and impact.
