Why Researchers Need More Than Research Skills

22 September, 6:00am - 6:30am UTC | Fireside Chat
Impact

Universities increasingly expect researchers to build meaningful partnerships, translate their expertise and contribute to societal impact, yet many receive little preparation for working beyond academic environments. In this fireside chat, Professor Carolin Plewa, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Researcher Education and Development) and Dean of Graduate Studies at Adelaide University, will explore how universities can better prepare researchers for engagement with industry, government and community partners. Drawing on her leadership of the Developing Positive Partnerships programme and her research on university–industry collaboration, the conversation will examine how institutions can develop the capabilities, confidence and mindsets needed for effective external engagement.

About

Researcher engagement does not happen by chance—it requires intentional capability development, institutional support and opportunities to learn through practice. In this session, Professor Carolin Plewa will share insights from designing and leading the Developing Positive Partnerships programme, which has supported early- and mid-career researchers to better understand external stakeholders, communicate their expertise and build productive relationships beyond academia. The discussion will explore what universities can do to embed engagement capabilities into researcher development, how experiential learning helps build confidence, and why these skills are increasingly essential for research excellence, collaboration and societal impact.

What you will learn

This Fireside Chat will focus on:

  1. Why partnership and engagement capabilities are becoming an essential part of researcher development.
